Welcome to my watercolour studio!

Creating from the Corner: My Home Studio Journey

Welcome back to the Brush & Pixels blog! Today, I’m excited to share a very personal part of my creative journey—my home studio. It’s a space that has evolved with me over the years, from a desk for my Interior Design projects to a Watercolor and Design haven. It’s proof that you don’t need a massive studio to be creative; you just need a corner of your home that’s uniquely yours.

The Evolution of My Creative Space

Interior Designer working on a project

When I first started my journey as a designer, my home studio was focused on interior design. I carved out a corner of my living room, setting up a desk, my computer, printer, and shelves filled with fabric samples, colour swatches, and design books and magazines. It was a compact but efficient space where I could brainstorm, sketch, and bring my client’s visions to life.

As my interests evolved, so did my studio. I transitioned from interior design to watercolour painting and digital design, requiring a different kind of setup.

I swapped out the fabric samples for watercolour paints, brushes, and high-quality paper. My desk had to expand to accommodate another working surface to separate the computer area from the painting area. My working area became a place for both digital design work and traditional painting, seamlessly blending the two worlds.

Finding my corner

Creating a studio at home is all about finding a corner that works for you. For me, it was a section of my living room that I transformed into a multifunctional creative space. Here’s how I did it:

1. Choosing the Right Spot: I picked a well-lit corner adjacent to a window to take advantage of natural light, which is essential for both painting and design work.

2. Optimizing the Space: I invested in two desks to create 2 separate working areas, that could accommodate both my computer and my painting supplies. Wall-mounted shelves help keep my materials organized and within reach without taking up too much floor space.

3. Personalizing the Area: To make the space feel uniquely mine, I decorated it with inspirational art, plants, and a comfortable chair. It’s important that your creative corner feels inviting and reflects your personal style.

No Excuses, Just Create

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that there’s no excuse not to be creative just because you don’t have a dedicated studio. Here are some tips for making the most of your space:

Be Flexible: Your creative space doesn’t have to be permanent. Use portable storage solutions like rolling carts or baskets to keep your supplies organized and easy to move.

Stay Organized: Keep your area tidy to maximize efficiency. Use shelves, organizers, and containers to keep everything in its place.

Make it Personal: Even a small corner can be inspiring. Add personal touches like photos, art, and plants to make the space feel special.

Adapt as Needed: As your creative interests evolve, be willing to adapt your space. Don’t be afraid to reconfigure or redecorate to better suit your current needs.

Inspiring Creativity

Having a dedicated space for creativity, no matter how small, has been incredibly inspiring for me. It’s a place where I can immerse myself in my work, experiment with new ideas, and let my imagination run wild. My home studio is a constant reminder that creativity knows no boundaries and that you can create beautiful things from any corner of your home.

I encourage you to find your creative corner and start making it your own. Whether it’s a nook in your living room, a spot in your bedroom, or even a section of your kitchen table, there’s no limit to where your creativity can flourish.
